American Threesquare (Scirpus americanus Persoon)

American threesquare was once used for chair caning and is also known, in fact, as chairmaker's rush. The plant is named threesquare because of the triangular stem.

The american threesquare in the photo was spotted at the edge of Snow Goose Pool along the Wildlife Loop (map). It is found in many parts of America, particularly in coastal wetland areas.

New plants grow from both seeds and spreading rhizomes (underground stems).
