| A great variety of animal and plant species has adapted to a sometimes perilous
life on this shifting barrier island located along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia.
With sections of Assateague managed and protected by the National Park Service, the Fish
and Wildlife Service, and the state of Maryland, Assateague offers a unique opportunity to
observe plants and animals of the Mid-Atlantic coast in an undeveloped, natural
environment. In most sections of the Web site, the approach has been to start with basic information on the plants and animals most often seen by visitors to Assateague Island; more thorough information and information on less frequently sighted species on Assateague will be added as the site is further developed.
