84th Annual Pony Swim & Auction
Wednesday, July 29: The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company’s annual Pony Penning always takes place on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in the month of July. The world famous Chincoteague Ponies swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island (less than 1000 yards) on Wednesday at the first "slack tide". The first foal ashore is named King or Queen Neptune and is given away in a raffle later that day at the Carnival Grounds. The Carnival opens immediately after the swim. Proceeds from this event fund the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. Monies are used for maintenance and purchase of equipment and care of the pony herd. A free shuttle runs the day of the swim to transport the 40,000 attendees to the swim site since parking is very limited to handicap only at Memorial Park.
Thursday, July 30: From 8:00 a.m. until noon an auction is held at the Carnival Grounds. People begin arriving around 7:00 a.m. to get a front row seat. The number of foals sold each year is determined by the Fire Company. The ponies are checked and cleared by veterinarians before being released to their new owners. Cash, Master Card, and Visa are accepted as payment. The Carnival opens immediately after the auction.

6th Annual Plein Air Event - Exhibit & Sale
6-10 PM - Paschal Hall at St. Andrew’s Church, 6288 Church Street.
On September 11 and 12, 2009, Chincoteague Cultural Alliance will sponsor the Sixth Annual Plein Air Art Event. “Plein Air” is a French term that means painting in the open air, working directly from the landscape as it appears at that moment. That is what 45 artists from 9 states (including California and Puerto Rico) will be doing for two days throughout Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. The Plein Air Art Event culminates on Saturday evening, September 12th, with a 6-10 PM reception, exhibit and sale of the artists’ work.
Artists will paint at locations of their choice throughout the islands, making use of their unique styles in pursuit of the common goal of capturing scenes as quickly as possible before the movements of sun and clouds alter the lighting and colors of the view. The press of time and changing light make plein air work energetic and exciting.
Visitors are able to watch the artists at work. Some artists are eager to talk about their work while they are painting. Others are so engrossed that they may be unaware on any onlookers. Watching a painting develop under the capable hand of one of these artists is a fascinating experience.
No two plein air paintings look alike even if the artists set up their easels side-by-side. Works will be executed in a variety of mediums - oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and pencil. Paintings range in size from miniatures to larger pieces that could become the focal point of a room.
Don’t miss this very popular event!
