Prickly Pear (Opuntia compressa)

Often found in sandy soil along the Mid-Atlantic Coast, has few spines. In the spring, this cactus produces yellow blooms, and its purplish fruits mature in the late summer and fall.

The fruits are edible, but because of their small bristles, they should be peeled. A jam is often made from the fruits.

The photos were taken in December just a few yards from the water of Tom's Cove.
