Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus
ater) Length: about 7". Photographed on May 23, 2005, along the refuge's Wildlife Loop (map). Common spring through fall on Assateague Island, the brown-headed cowbird feeds on seeds and insects. Female cowbirds are noted for laying their eggs in the nests of other birds. If eggs of another species are present, she'll pitch one out and lay her own in its place. |
