Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)
Length: about 20".
Photographed on May 23 & 26, 2005, along the refuge's Wildlife Loop (map) at the edge of Snow Goose Pool.

Common in summer, but uncommon in other seasons, these herons usually feed at dusk or night. They are noted for dining on the young of other species while most often they wait patiently for fish, insects, reptiles, or amphibians.
