Assateague Wood Duck, Tree Swallow,
and Fox Squirrel Houses

Staff at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island have constructed many wood duck and tree swallow nesting boxes. You'll spot several of the large wood duck boxes with their metal predator shields and the smaller tree swallow boxes (usually over water) along the Assateague refuge's Wildlife Loop (map). The Woodland Trail on the refuge is a good place to look for the Fox Squirrel boxes attached to loblolly pine trees.

Notes:

Mallard Nesting Structures:
The Delta Waterfowl Foundation's Web site has information on constructing a hen house
(tunnel) for mallards for protection against predators ("Demonstrating Success," then
"Delta's Hen House Program"). An article at the Saskatchewan Wetland Conservation
Corporation's Web site
in May 1997 indicated that such nesting tunnels are preferred by
mallards over basket-style structures.

Nest Boxes for Other Birds:
A Web page at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Homes for Birds, has very useful information
on constructing nest boxes for bluebirds, robins, chickadees, nuthatches, titmice,
brown creepers, prothonotary warblers, wrens, tree and violet-green swallows, barn swallows,
phoebes, purple martins, flycatchers, woodpeckers, owls, and other birds.
