Ponderous Ark (Noetia ponderosa) The ponderous ark is a clam found from Virginia southward. It has a thick, white shell, sometimes found still covered by the dark-brown, velvet-like periostracum which protects the shell from corrosion. From 27 to 31 well-developed, square ribs mark the exterior of the shell, and prominent teeth line the hinge.
