Two 1998 nor'easters, on January 27th - 28th and February 4th - 5th, leveled dunes and filled the Assateague beach parking areas with sand. The parking area (lot #1) north of  the beach headquarters was cleared soon after the storms, and those south of  the headquarters building were re-established in time for the early summer visitor season.

During the first storm, the Chincoteague causeway was closed for about five hours on Wednesday January 28th, and utilities for the beach visitor center and bathhouses were destroyed.  The second storm brought two days of rain and wind gusts of about 70 mph. Flooding on Chincoteague led to the closing of Maddox Boulevard and Smith Street on Thursday, February 5th; and the Chincoteague causeway was once again closed for several hours.
